The biological basis of religion

Came across this Scientific American article on Darwinian theorists gathering to talk about religion.

The author sees potential for science to help resolve social conflict:

Topics such as God, souls and sin are no longer being treated as “outside science” but rather as biologically based emanations of the evolved human mind, subject to psychological scrutiny like any other aspect of human nature. And I can only hope that soon these scientific discoveries will translate to real world intervention strategies in the reconciliation of spiritually based social conflicts.

The article also goes on to talk about a new field called ‘Evolutionary Religious Studies’ and drops a link.

I’m fascinated by the possibilities embedded in science and religion having more constructive dialogue. I think they reinforce each other and eventually could demand a new perspective on reality that will elevate philosophy as well.

Religion is an integral part of human culture so to not study religion scientifically is to truncate the overall data set.
